Kiribati Roading Project Nears Completion

Fraser Thomas formed an association with Roughton International to prepare detailed design for upgrading the main 30km road on the island of Tarawa – the capital of Kiribati, and the main feeder roads. Ian Archer of Fraser Thomas first led the design team, which had to address difficult issues relating to road material availability, drainage, coastal protection and the environment as well as budget issues set by the World Bank. The contract for the physical works was won by McConnell Dowell who commenced work in 2013, and are currently scheduled to complete their work in August 2016. The road improvements have had a dramatic effect on the lives of the 60,000 people of Tarawa, greatly reducing journey times.
