Rarangi Beach House
The design works for this project incorporated collaborative geotechnical and structural engineering services for a complex two-storey residential dwelling, detached garage, and sleep-out.
The Longbeach Bay Annex is another highly architectural structure within the Longbeach Bay development.
This project offered complex challenges from a design perspective, primarily due to the buildings, open plan layout, and location on the sloping site. The structure was designed to have large openings along two of the sides and very little internal wall area. Support against wind and earthquake loading is achieved through the use of ply bracing and steel portal frames, which were cleverly hidden within the structure. The architectural and exposed nature of the building also demanded hidden connections that were durable against the corrosive beach conditions of the site.
Due to its remoteness, this site was difficult to access, resulting in the need for all teams involved to collaborate well, minimise on-site construction setbacks, and develop innovative solutions such as helicoptering in concrete.
Ultimately, the final dwelling incorporates intricate design and construction, earning it a nomination for the prestigious New Zealand Institute of Architecture (NZIA) awards. This nomination reflects the dedication, hard work, and creativity of all the teams involved with this development.
