Rarangi Beach House
The design works for this project incorporated collaborative geotechnical and structural engineering services for a complex two-storey residential dwelling, detached garage, and sleep-out.
Receiving a prestigious Small Project Architecture award from the NZ Institute of Architects (NZIS), this memorable project involved collaboration between our in-house geotechnical and structural engineering teams, to develop a new highly architectural single storey boatshed, with a self-launching and retrieving boat trailer, located on the beachfront of the Queen Charlotte sound.
Due to the architectural and site-specific requirements, it was necessary for the structural elements to be both hidden within the building’s structure, as well as durable against the corrosive marine conditions. Additional design elements we incorporated include the utilisation of integral concrete block masonry walls cut into the hillside which retained the steep bank above, the provision of a reinforced concrete foundation and slab designed as a special “marine mix” for durability, and the use of steel portal frames.
As the site had significant access constraints due to its remoteness, it was vital that each team involved on the project collaborated and minimised site construction setbacks; with the concrete trucks being bought to site via barge, and a specialist spider crane being employed for the shed erection, this was successfully achieved, with all parties developing great working relationships.
We are very proud of the boatshed’s final design, our incorporation of intricate design features, and of the thorough construction undertaken. The Award by the NZIS reflects the dedication, hard work, and creativity of all the teams involved with this development.
