Contamination

Contamination in land development is an undesirable issue, which can appear in a variety of forms.  If not eliminated correctly, contaminated land and asbestos can affect the value and saleability of your property.

Contamination

Contamination is a topic Fraser Thomas is highly qualified and skilled to tackle, with 4 qualified specialists in-house.  Our team has extensive experience with a variety of contamination issues, including:

Asbestos managemenT

Fraser Thomas have trained staff to undertake domestic and commercial building surveys for asbestos under the new Asbestos Regulations 2016. These staff have all attended a rigorous four-day course entitled “BOHS-IP402 Survey and Sampling Strategies for Asbestos in Buildings”, which enables them to carry out Asbestos Management, Refurbishment and Pre-demolition surveys of buildings and campuses. We have over 16 years of contaminated site experience, including assessing, remediating and managing asbestos contamination in soils, and over 40 years of building inspections through our structural engineers.

We can help your business to meet your requirements under the Health and Safety at Work (Asbestos) Regulations 2016.

CONTAMINATED LAND

We are Contaminated Land Consultants.

“Contaminated land” is land that contains hazardous substances (contaminants) in soil at elevated levels that can have significant adverse effects on human health and the environment.

Contaminated land needs to be managed or remediated to protect people and the environment. We have been doing Contaminated Land work for over 15 years and have completed over 200 projects to date including investigating historical contamination of former agricultural and horticultural land, industry, old landfills and sportsfields subject to a wide range of potential contaminants – fill material, asbestos, heavy metals, pesticides/herbicides, hydrocarbons, etc.

We cover all facets of contaminated land work, including the following:

  • Preliminary site investigations (PSI) – desktop studies, visual appraisal, reporting
  • Detailed site investigations (DSI) – PSI + soil/water sampling, laboratory analyses and XRF sampling, reporting
  • Risk assessments
  • Resource consenting – NESCS, District and Regional Plans
  • Remedial Action Plans, Management and Monitoring Plans
  • Supervision of remedial works, site validation and reporting
  • Peer review and preparation of expert evidence
SURFACE WATER, GROUNDWATER AND SEDIMENT SAMPLING; GROUND AND LANDFILL GAS MONITORING

Many contaminated land projects also involve surface and/or groundwater sampling to check for contaminant migration, while ground and landfill gas monitoring are often required on old landfill sites to check for associated human health and environmental risks. Our staff are trained in water and gas sampling protocols and sampling techniques and have undertaken such work on a large number of projects, ranging from sediment sampling on ponds in horticultural catchments to extensive landfill gas monitoring on closed landfills now being used for recreational or community purposes.
