No two days are ever the same with Fraser Thomas as all our work is project based. You will get the opportunity to work on projects of varying scale, across multiple sectors and face a new set of exciting challenges with each project. You will not only be the engineer on the project you will essentially be the project manager; responsible for the entire project through design, consenting, construction observation and certification. Working across the residential, commercial, industrial, community, recreational, health and education sectors; Fraser Thomas are able to complete a large variety of work scopes – see our projects page for more detail and examples.

Fraser Thomas is involved with many international projects supporting socio-economic development in countries including Vietnam, Lao PDR and the Pacific. We encourage all staff to be involved on these projects.

Current Vacancies

About the Role:

Working as an integral part of our Civil and Environmental teams, we will assist you to gain a broad overall understanding of projects (the big picture) through experience working across projects from start to finish, i.e. design, consent, tendering, construction observation and administration to completion.

 

The role will typically include:

  • Roading and landform design of small to large residential and industrial projects on greenfield and brownfield sites
  • Water, wastewater and stormwater reticulation and treatment
  • Concept through detailed design, consenting, contract management, and construction observation.

 

Auckland Civil and Environmental engineering teams comprise of three CPEng with over 30 years’ experience each, a Civil Associate with 26 years’ experience in land development in the Auckland and Canterbury regions, three graduate civil and two graduate environmental engineers, a senior engineering technician and two senior civil/environmental engineers. We also have a licensed surveyor with 35+ years’ experience, and a team of surveyors to support land development projects.

 

Qualifications and experience required:

  • Professional degree in Civil Engineering
  • Minimum of 3 years detailed design, site assessment and observation experience in civil engineering work in New Zealand
  • Proficiency in Civil Engineering design software (Civil3D or equivalent)
  • Familiarity with relevant Codes of Practice, NZ Standards, technical publications and guidelines
  • Excellent written reporting skills
  • You must hold NZ residency status or be a NZ citizen.

  • Willingness to work in two or more different areas (e.g. civil design, stormwater, wastewater)

About the Role:

You will be a key member of our Survey team, assisting with the provision of high quality services, primarily in the Auckland region, but may also involve on-site or remote assistance to the Christchurch office with their project work around the Canterbury area. Workload demands will allow you to be involved in a proportionate amount of field to office work; you won’t be stuck at a desk day after day.

 

The role will typically include:

  • Engineering Surveying
  • Cadastral Surveying
  • Site and building survey monitoring
  • Preparation of reports and specifications, sketches and/or finished drawings.

 

Auckland Survey team comprises one Licensed Surveyor, with over 30 years’ experience, one senior surveyor (Associate), a graduate surveyor, and three technician surveyors.

 

Qualifications and experience required:

  • Surveying diploma or degree
  • Confidence with Word, Magnet, GPS, Total and Robotic Stations and Land-on-Line
  • Be eligible to work in New Zealand and have a current NZ driving licence.

About the Role:

We are currently looking for a Graduate to join our Geotechnical Engineering/Engineering Geology team at our Highbrook office in Auckland.  This position will provide the successful applicant with the opportunity to gain widespread experience through the field of geotechnical engineering/engineering geology.

  • Professional degree in Civil Engineering (geotechnical), Engineering Geology or Geology.

About the Role:

We are currently looking for an intermediate level Engineering Geologist to join the Geotechnical Engineering/Engineering Geology team at our Highbrook office in Auckland.  This position will provide the successful applicant with the opportunity to gain widespread experience through the field of geotechnical engineering/engineering geology.

 

Tasks involved would typically include:

  • Undertaking of site inspections and geotechnical investigations, which may include hand auger boreholes, test pits or machine boreholes, appraisal of data and preparation of geotechnical reports
  • Client liaison and administration relating to individual projects
  • Provide guidance to junior geotechnical staff as required

 

About You:

Qualifications and experience required:

  • Professional degree in Engineering Geology
  • Minimum 5 year’s NZ experience in a similar role
  • Experience with analytical programmes (Slope/W)
  • Current NZ driving licence

Professional Development

Fraser Thomas is a member of ACENZ and has been a Professional Development Partner (PDP) of Engineering New Zealand since 2009. We have an effective, proven mentoring programme in place that encourages and supports Engineers to reach their professional development goals. This programme includes the following:

  • Monthly in-house seminars
  • Providing staff with opportunities to take part in external seminars, conferences and training courses
  • Encouraging staff to undertake post-graduate study, including the provision of financial support
  • Regular team and project related meetings
  • Junior and intermediate staff (“mentees”) being linked to senior staff (mentors), who meet regularly to chart and discuss progress towards the mentee’s professional development goals
  • Mock interviews to mimic professional interviews.

Scholarship

Fraser Thomas runs a ‘First Look’ scholarship programme that provides financial support to university students studying engineering at Auckland University or surveying at Otago University. This includes offering scholars practical work experience during university holidays at one of our offices, with a view to future full-time employment. The ‘First Look’ Scholarship programme has been in place since 2002.
