Highbrook Regional Watersports Centre

Design and construction observation of water supply and wastewater system, for an Auckland regional watersports facility.

Highbrook Regional Watersports Centre

In 2007 a Paddling and Rowing Regional Facilities Study was prepared and issued by Council’s Visitor Solutions team.  It identified that no centre was available in the Auckland region to cater for major rowing, waka ama or paddle-board sports events.

Three locations were explored – Lucas Creek (Albany), Hobson Basin (Orakei), and Tamaki River (Highbrook).

The site is located on the foreshore of the Tamaki River. The project extends into the coastal marine area via boat ramp, pontoon and building and its foundations. The building will contain storage areas and clubrooms (also doubling as a training area and facilities).  It is proposed that the location will cater for a 2000 metre length regatta course along the Tamaki River towards the Panmure Bridge.

The project is being completed in three stages:

  • Formation of lower platform including access, carpark works, boat ramp and retaining wall structure
  • Pontoon construction
  • Construction of the building.

More recently, (2023) Fraser Thomas were engaged by the Highbrook Regional Watersports Centre Trust to design and observe construction of the water supply and waste-water system for the development.  This section of work comprised a proprietary wastewater pump station with associated controls and rising main to a new public system, and a temporary ablution block (building consent).  A new public wastewater drainage extension was constructed under Engineering Plan Approval (EPA). Watercare have now issued the Certificate of Acceptance (CoA) and CCC is expected shortly for the ablution block.

The project has sustained lengthy delays due mainly to covid and obtaining adequate funding for the project. However, Auckland Council Sports and Recreation Infrastructure Fund which has led a team of funders with an investment of $5.3m in the last 24 months, has allowed the next phase to commence – Building Construction – with detailed drawings and specifications now being designed / prepared.

The ablution block and associated wastewater, water supply and utilities work included Fraser Thomas survey, geotechnical, structural and civil engineering staff.
