MOTAT 2 Carpark and Cycleway/Walkway

Auckalnd’s iconic museum has just received an extension to expand visitor parking capacity.

MOTAT 2 Carpark and Cycleway/walkway

Detailed design for the development of a new carpark area and upgrade of an internal access road.

Situated atop the former Motions/Meola landfill, Fraser Thomas assisted with the design of a new carpark area and upgrade of an internal access road, along with associated stormwater drainage and water reticulation line upgrade, for the Museum of Transport and Technology.  This much-needed additional car parking will service both MOTAT and Zoo visitors.

Detail of the services Fraser Thomas provided include:

  • Detailed design had to address landfill issues, relating to ground conditions, soil/fill contamination, leachate and landfill gas. Supplementary geotechnical and contaminated land investigations were undertaken to establish and/or confirm appropriate design parameters covering earthworks, retaining walls and other structures and better outline the horizontal and vertical extent of contamination in areas to be subject to soil disturbance, utilising preliminary investigation and design work undertaken by others
  • Detailed design of proposed earthworks and retaining walls to shape the overall landform and to form the proposed carpark platform levels and general site access, and associated erosion and sediment controls, access road/cycleway/walkway and carpark design, including pavement details, fencing and associated services, stormwater and drainage design including stormwater pump station, water reticulation upgrade and other structures – foundations/footings for carpark light poles, height restrictor frames at carpark entry/exit points, access gates, perimeter security fencing, bollards and carpark ticketing machines
  • Detailed design included development of GCL detail and methodology for dealing with any refuse encountered during the works or for disturbing the landfill cap and coming within 500mm of refuse. Extensive coordination with MOTAT, MOTAT project manager, architects, electrical engineers and landscapers
  • Preparation of detailed design report, including safety in design register and associated Erosion and Sediment Control Plan and Site Management Plan and submission with associated drawings to Council, Watercare and the Council Closed Landfill Team for EPA approval and Asset Owner Approval (AOA) for works on a closed landfill. Preparation of tender documents for a two stage tender, comprising stormwater enabling works (first package) and carpark and cycleway/walkway works (second package). Review of tender submissions and participation on tender evaluation panel. Package 1 and 2 works are both under construction, with FTL providing construction observation services
  • Further commissions to undertake geotechnical and contaminated land investigations and structural foundation design for Gate H entrance upgrade (also on closed landfill) and for Shed Alley upgrade, involving contaminated land, landfill gas assessment and structural foundation design

Services Provided:

  • Peer Review
  • Construction Observation
  • Geotechnical Investigation
  • Contaminated Land Investigation
  • Stormwater Design
  • Stormwater Pump Station Design
  • Watermain Design
  • Site Management Plan
  • Erosion and Sediment Control Plan
  • A Safety in Design Risk Register
