Opaheke Sports Park

Fraser Thomas designed the water supply system for dedicated changing rooms at the Opaheke Sports Park development.

OPAHEKE SPORTS PARK – WATER SUPPLY SYSTEM

Fraser Thomas were engaged by Auckland Council to design, consent and project manage the construction of the Opaheke sports park, comprising an extensive sports park on the outskirts of Papakura.

This utilised our surveying, geotechnical, civil and environmental engineering and contaminated land expertise, in combination with specialist external planners, arborists, landscape architects, sports turf advisors and traffic engineers.

Key features of the sports park include:

  • Eight new fields
  • Improved (widened) access from Opaheke Road
  • Access roading and car parking, changing facility and playground, with provision for future lighting
  • Groundwater bore water supply
  • Stormwater—wetland treatment of access road/carpark runoff
  • Wastewater – on-site wastewater treatment and disposal vs off-site disposal
  • Extensive landscaping

Stage 2 of this project involved detailed design and construction of dedicated changing rooms and public toilets and a possible future clubrooms, designed by Archoffice, with Fraser Thomas providing water supply and wastewater disposal services.

Collectively, this work has involved investigation, consenting, design, construction observation and certification of the water supply system for irrigation of the sportsfields, fire fighting water storage and changing room use, using a dual supply based on roof water harvesting from proposed changing rooms and groundwater bore take, supplemented by tanker topup, due to lack of reticulated water supply in area.

Specific work components included:

  • Coordinate drilling, testing and commissioning of new bore including water quality testing
  • Development of in-house rainwater harvesting model to compare water demand versus roofwater capture to optimise storage tank sizing
  • Preparation of technical reports and Assessment of Environmental Effects (AEE), including groundwater take and stormwater discharge consents
  • Assistance with consultation with stakeholders including Iwi
  • Detailed design of shared underground tank for fire fighting temporary use and sportsfield irrigation and above ground tanks for roof water harvesting
  • Construction observation and certification of water supply system
  • Preparation of performance specification for system operation, monitoring and alert requirements
  • Evaluation of alternative wastewater disposal options, based on on-site wastewater treatment and disposal system, temporary holding tank and tanker disposal and longer term connection to public reticulation once extended to area
  • Detailed design of wastewater holding tank, future proofed to be converted to pump station to deliver wastewater to Bellfields subdivision wastewater network, when constructed.

Special Features:

  • Self-sufficient water supply for sportsfield irrigation
  • Partially self-sufficient water supply for changing rooms, with tanker topup until connected to future reticulation
  • Wastewater solution future proofed for future connection to public reticulation system.

Services Provided:

  • Surveying
  • Civil/Environmental Engineering
  • Geotechnical engineering
  • Technical reporting and consenting
  • Preparation of tender and contract documents
  • Contract administration
  • Construction observation works.
