A large open plan Cold Store / industrial building (approx. 37m by 21m) was to be constructed with a tight deadline due to the upcoming harvest season.
Fraser Thomas were engaged to assist HML Engineering to provide Structural and Geotechnical Engineering services for this Design and Build Project. The project works was to construct a new large open plan Cold Store / industrial building (approx. 37m by 21m) within the Thomas Brothers site in Riwaka, Nelson.
Due to the upcoming harvest, this project needed to be completed on a tight deadline and within an existing operating environment.
To meet the timeframes for this project, a staged building consent (foundations and superstructure) and clever construction methodology were adopted by our engineering team. Fraser Thomas worked closely with the main contractor, who are also a very experienced and specialist structural steel contractor, HML Engineering, to deliver the building.
Through close collaboration between our in-house geotechnical and structural engineering teams, Fraser Thomas were able to save costs by optimising the foundations. A fibre mix slab by Inforce also reduced the number of joints and sawcuts to the slab.
A focus on efficient structural detailing and on-site assembly of the prefabricated steel members (i.e. steel portal frames, wind beams, columns, roof beams to support services, and other primary structure) saved significantly on transportation issues and costs, and ensured rapid construction which met the client’s deadline.
